Disclosure Screening Service

The recent developments of the Protection of Children (Scotland) Act 2003 now mean that anyone taking up a role that is considered to be a ‘child care’ position, must be checked against the ‘disqualified from working with children list’ via a Disclosure Scotland check. This legislation defines a child as being under 18. More details on this legislation can be located on www.scotland.gov.uk

Angus Sports Council (ASC) has recognised that in order to fulfil its role of supporting and developing sport in Angus, a mechanism for allowing accessible disclosure checks for volunteer coaches/helpers must be available. ASC also recognises that clubs do not wish to receive sensitive information on friends and family thus we have taken these vital steps.

We are pleased to announce that ASC has now been registered with the Central Registration Body in Scotland (CRBS) as an ‘Umbrella Body’. This means that ASC can countersign disclosure applications on behalf of its affiliated clubs.

Full details can be found here.

Club Development Projects

We are pulling together an application for club development funding from SportScotland – which has to be innovative.

We would be very grateful if you could add your comments to be used in support of the application.

Full details and the feedback forms can be found here.

Angus Sports Awards Winners 2005

Nominate Now!

Presented by   Angus Sports Council

Sponsored by   Angus Ahead

The sporting stars of Angus were in the spotlight for the 10th anniversary celebrations at the Angus Sports Awards ceremony on Tuesday night.  The Angus Sports Awards 2005 ceremony took place at the Reid Hall, Forfar and proved a highly entertaining evening.

Angus Sports Council again took the opportunity to honour the commitment, achievements and dedication of individuals and teams involved in sport across Angus. Angus Council Sports Development Team along with Angus Ahead, the area marketing campaign set up to fly the flag for the county at home and abroad, supported the Angus Sports Awards 2005.

Cross Country Mountain Biker, James Ouchterlony of Arbroath was named Sports Personality of the Year following a number of excellent results during 2005.  James has become one of the top riders in Britain, competes internationally and is currently in Melbourne preparing to represent Scotland at the Commonwealth Games.  In 2005 James became the first Scottish rider to ever win a British senior championship medal and just pipped bowler Darren Burnett (Arbroath) and archer Simon Needham (Montrose) to the award.

The Young Sports Personality of the Year was Alan Green of Arbroath Lawn Tennis Club.  Alan is ranked 1st in Scotland and 9th in Britain at the under 16 age group and won 13 singles and doubles titles during 2005.  9 nominations were received in this category and Alan came out on top of a short list of four with Jonny O’Mara (Tennis), Abbi Aitken (Cricket) and Joe Keenan (Archery).

Forfar Farmington Ladies Football Club were named Team of the Year following their successful promotion to the Scottish Women’s Premier League and their Scottish League Cup triumph in 2005 and football was celebrating again as Jock Myles collected the Service to Sport Award.  Jock has been associated with junior football across Angus and Tayside for 42 years including 24 as Secretary to Carnoustie Panmure Junior Football Club.  Jock is to be further honoured by a testimonial dinner from the Scottish Junior FA for his years of commitment to junior football.

Alan Dye of Montrose Shotokan Karate Club took the honour as Coach of the Year following his development of the club to a level that has seen two of his student’s selected represent Scotland in 2005. Alan has also increased club membership and made Montrose Shotokan Karate Club a family friendly environment.

The Sports Personality of the Year Award for People with a Disability went to Boccia player Kristin MacMaster.  Kristin, a pupil at Monifieth High School, competed at both junior and senior levels during 2005 and has a current ranking of 32nd in Europe.  Kristin just edged out Special Olympic tenpin bowler Brett Isaac and fellow Boccia player Martin Cassidy of Kirriemuir to gain this award.

The ceremony was hosted by Radio Tay and guest speaker, Jed Renilson of Forfar, entertained the audience before a three course meal was served.

Angus Sports Council Chairperson Alan O’Neill Said “Angus Sports Council are delighted to be in a position to recognise and reward all those involved in sport across Angus.  We would like to thank all those who made nominations for the awards and our partners Angus Council’s Sports Development Team and Angus Ahead who helped us stage this fantastic event.”

Angus Sports Council would also like to thank Angus Council, Liz McColgan Health Club & Physiotherapy Centre, Angus Disability Sport, Merpro Ltd, Angus College, Radio Tay – Caring For Kids and McDonald’s Restaurant, Forfar who all sponsored different award categories.
