    Sportshall Athletic 2003 Report

Angus Sports Council this year, again supported the Angus Sportshall athletics team.

Come and try practice sessions were held on Sunday afternoons at The Saltire Leisure Centre, Arbroath and were attended by a large number of children from all over Angus. Dates of these sessions were 12/01/03, 19/01/03, 26/01/03 and 02/02/03.

Following these sessions a team was selected to represent Angus at the regional heat, which took place at Dundee International Sports Complex (DISC) on Sunday 16th February. Angus competed at under 13 and under 15 age groups for both boys and girls.  All of our teams successfully qualified for the North of Scotland Final.

Under the watchful eye of Brian Durbidge and his coaching team, the 35 athletes of the Angus team moved onto the North of Scotland Final, following a final practice session the previous Wednesday night, which took place on Sunday 9th March at Inverness Sports Centre.

The team worked well under the guidance of their team managers and produced some excellent performances which resulted in 23 individual medals being won by Angus athletes, including 6 gold, 6 silver and 11 bronze.

Special mention must go to Mark Tough, a pupil of   Brechin High School, who threw a Scottish record in the shot putt of 12.60m beating the previous record of 11.57m.

Thanks must go to all of the coaches and helpers who volunteered their time to make this Sportshall Athletics campaign the success it has been, both at the practice sessions and competitions. Without this kind of support from local coaches and volunteers this event would not have happened.

Special thanks must go to our overall Team Manager Brian Durbidge, who lead the team superbly, and the individual team managers at each age group Anne Pedgrift, Wendy Elliot, Craig Lusby and Alan Simpson.
