As
Chairperson of Angus Sports Council it is my privilege to welcome
you to our Annual Report for the year 2002/03.
This is my second year as the chair and I am pleased to
report that there is still a lot of activity taking place within and
around the sporting clubs of Angus.
It is my feeling that more clubs within the Angus area are
beginning to believe the importance and benefit of being affiliated
and, more importantly, involved with the business of their local
sports council.
As
mentioned there has been a lot of activity in Angus including the
participation in SALSC events, Sportshall Athletics involvement, the
Angus Sports Awards as well as the more important issues child
protection and coach disclosure.
Back
in July and August of 2002 various sports council’s played host to
the annual SALSC events for Men’s and Ladies Bowls and Boy’s
Golf, respectively. Angus
was represented by teams from member clubs in each of these events,
and although we did not come away with any medals the teams reported
that they performed well and enjoyed their involvement.
Many thanks and well done goes to all those that took part
and represented Angus Sports Council.
February
2003 saw the Annual Sportshall Athletics Competition, which Angus
Sports Council are, shall I say, strong contenders!
This Year was no exception.
Under the watchful eye of Brian Durbidge and his coaching
team, the 35 athletes of the Angus team qualified for the North of
Scotland Final, which took place on Sunday 9th March at
Inverness Sports Centre.
The
team worked well under the guidance of their team managers and
produced some excellent performances which resulted in 23 individual
medals being won by Angus athletes, including 6 gold, 6 silver and
11 bronze.
Thanks
must go to all of the coaches and helpers who volunteered their time
to make this Sportshall Athletics campaign the success it has been,
both at the practice sessions and competitions. Without this kind of
support from local coaches and volunteers this event would not have
happened.
Special
thanks must go to our overall Team Manager Brian Durbidge, who lead
the team superbly, and the individual team managers at each age
group Anne Pedgrift, Wendy Elliot, Craig Lusby and Alan Simpson.
Tuesday
13th March 2003, the Angus Sports Awards 2002, what an
event for Angus Sports Council.
Yet again, there was a tremendous number of nominations, not
only in quantity, but more importantly in quality making the
selection panel’s job agonisingly difficult.
Overall the whole event was outstanding with the added
electrical buzz of Ally Bally and his team from Radio Tay.
It was also nice to hear the ASC awards broadcast the
following day on Radio Tay. However,
as always the event would never take place without the sponsors.
My thanks go to, in no particular order; Radio Tay’s Caring
for Kids, Fersina Windows, Sportack Saddlery, Montrose, Angus
College, Angus Disability Sport, Tannadice Trophies, Auchlishie
Eventing, and Angus Council for the continued support they give to
Angus Sports Council. Congratulations, again, go to all the winners and it was
especially good to see my own sport hitting the headlines!
Gary Clelland from Carnoustie Freestyle Karate was given a
special recognition award for his achievements over the past year in
Freestyle Karate/Kickboxing. I
hope that in the presence of sportscotland representation at the
awards evening this put across some message to encourage martial
arts to be given some recognition on the national stage.
Well done and thanks to all those that were involved.
Over
the past few months ASC has been making efforts to improve the
standard of sporting clubs operating through Angus that are
affiliated. We are
achieving this, and ensuring best practice in sports clubs, by
ensuring that all affiliated clubs have a child protection policy. I fully support this requirement, which will ensure safety
for children and vulnerable adults participating in sports clubs
throughout Angus. All
clubs affiliating to Angus Sports Council will be required to
produce a policy by July 2003.
I
would like to thank everyone that has been involved in the
activities of Angus Sports Council over the past year.
My report only presents a snap shot of the year and I,
therefore, apologise to anyone that I have left out.
Special thanks, as always, go to Fraser Govan (Secretary) and
John Stevenson (Treasurer) for their help and encouragement for all
the hard work they put in to keep a steady ship.
I
will close by saying that I am looking forward to a very strong and
active year ahead for ASC, as I am willing to carry on as the
Chairperson.
