STUART WILSON
109TH
BRITISH AMATEUR CHAMPION
Stuart
Wilson reflecting on his magnificent achievement in the 109th
Amateur Championship played at St Andrews, the home of golf.
Stuart’s
life as a top class amateur golfer hit a new level on the final day
of the championship at the beginning of June when he clinched the
title, defeating Lee Corfield four and three in an absorbing 36-hole
final. Throughout the
tournament week he matched his best ever performance by defeating
England’s Paul Waring by two holes, to book a last eight place. A victory over Italy’s Francesco Moinari, three and one,
resulted in a semi-final match against fellow Scot, Eric Ramsay,
Stuart triumphing two and one.
That set things up perfectly for a 36-hole showdown with
Englishman Lee Corfield over the Old Course on the final Saturday.
The
growing excitement reached very pitch when Stuart got off to a
flying start and was three shots up at the half-way stage.
The second round in the afternoon saw Stuart’s army of
supporters grow, including Prince Andrew, captain of the R&A. None were to be disappointed as Stuart kept his nerve
throughout, finally closing the match out on the 15th to
a huge cheer. The
presentation of the amateur trophy, a champagne celebration and an
appearance at the R&A’s 250th anniversary dinner
followed.
Stuart,
the 2003 Angus Sports Awards - Sports Personality of the year, for
now, can soak up the moment. Speaking
to the media soon after the triumph, Stuart said: “This is
obviously the peak of my career, probably more than the Walker Cup,
although it’s hard to compare because they are very different
events.”
