The achievements of the sportsmen and women of the county
were recognised at the annual Angus Sports Awards in Forfar’s Reid
Hall on Tuesday 16 March 2004.
Promoted by Angus Sports Council the awards are now in their
8th year and once again attracted an outstanding breadth
of entries, showcasing the very best of Angus sporting talent.
Sponsored by Angus Ahead, the promotional campaign for the
county, the awards offered a welcome opportunity to celebrate the
achievements of the sportsmen and women of Angus and give due
recognition to those who give their time to support and coach them.
For each time a team or an individual competes they not only
represent themselves but they also raise the awareness of the
diversity of Angus talent and the wealth of sporting opportunities
and support which exists in the county.
“Angus Ahead aims to promote a sense of pride in the county
and its many achievements. This is a task made easy when award
schemes like this have such qualities of entries - in sporting terms
Angus certainly has every reason to celebrate “ said Provost Bill
Middleton, Chair of the Angus Ahead Champions
Radio Tay’s Ally Bally broadcast this year’s awards
ceremony with guest speaker Dundee FP Rugby Club’s Tom Dimmock
Once again the Angus Sports Awards fielded an excellent
standard of entries, showcasing the very best of Angus sporting
talent across golf, athletics, ski-ing, gymnastics, archery and even
American football to name but a few.
Sport
in Angus has thrived during 2003 with the county playing host to
several national and international events including: the Scottish
Disability Sport National 11-a-side Football Championships, the
Scottish Triathlon Championships at Monikie, the National Under-18
Golf Championships and the International 4-Nations Basketball
Tournament.
Explained event organiser Fraser Govan of Angus Sports
Council “ It is an absolute eye opener to realise the excellence
and sheer dedication there is towards sport in Angus. “
