Depute Provost Murphy with all of the winners who achieved an award at
the ceremony
The sporting stars of
Angus were in the spotlight for the 12th annual Angus Sports Awards
ceremony on Tuesday night. The Angus Sports Awards 2007 ceremony took
place at the Reid Hall, Forfar and proved a highly entertaining evening.
Angus Sports Council again
took the opportunity to honour the commitment, achievements and dedication
of individuals and teams involved in sport across Angus. Angus Council
Sports Development Team along with Angus Ahead, the area marketing
campaign set up to fly the flag for the county at home and abroad,
supported the Angus Sports Awards 2007.
Simon Needham of Links Archers, Montrose was named
Sports Personality of the Year in
recognition of his sporting achievements during 2007. Simon is current
Scottish Number 1 archer with wins at both the indoor and outdoor Scottish
Championships in 2007 and has achieved the qualifying scores set for the
2008 Bejing Olympics, which means he has a great chance of competing in
what will be his 2nd Olympic Games. He is a current member of the coaching
staff of the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish senior squads, focussing
on Archery equipment and is a published author with a book and DVD
allowing others to experience first-hand how an Olympic Archer sets about
obtaining the best from his equipment. Simon intends to lead Scotland in
the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Dehli after archery was confirmed as one of
the sports that will compete at these games.
The
Young Sports Personality of the Year was
Hannah Stewart also of Links Archers,
which shows the strength and depth of archery in the area. Hannah is a
member of the Commonwealth Development Squad at age of just 15 and
represented GB in the World Indoor Archery Championships in Turkey, 2007
and won Gold medals in the Scottish indoor & outdoor championships,
Euro-nations and GB indoor championships. She won a sliver medal at the
Scottish Senior championships and achieved senior GB Master Bowman status
in 2007 and was one of only five junior ladies to do so across the UK.
Hannah is ranked top junior girl in Scotland for the third year in a row
and 5th junior girl in UK. 20 nominations were received in this category
and Hannah came out on top of a short list of four with Rosie Allan
(Squash), Abbi Aitken (Cricket) and Gemma Collier (Football).
Arbroath & District Athletics Club - Men's Team were named
Team of the Year after they won the
Scottish Athletics First Division title that is the highest-level league
in Scotland for athletics. Arbroath & District Athletics Club won the
First Division title 6 years ago and worked hard to repeat this
achievement in 2007. In a very competitive league the team won 3 out of 4
league matches and clinched the title before the last match of the season
where they were just pipped into 2nd place. They hope to maintain
performance to hopefully retain the title next season, which would be a
first for clubs out with the Central area.
Grant Hutchison of Montrose & District Cricket Club took the
honour as Coach of the Year. Grant has
coached primary schools in Montrose for 13 years and has been instrumental
in advancing girls cricket in schools and clubs during this period. He has
coached various Montrose teams ranging from Under 11's to Seniors and was
Head Coach of Central Scotland Under 12's as they claimed the Scottish
District Championship in 2007 and also found time to coach the under 11
and under 15 sides. 2 of Grant's Montrose U17's team have been called up
into the Women's World Cup and U21 European Championship squad. Grant has
continually coached Angus teams since 2002 and is current coach and
captain of the Montrose senior side and on top of his coaching Grant holds
the positions of Secretary and Treasurer to Angus Cricket Development
Group.
